How to take care of curly hair?
First of all, it is good to know that curls are thinner and more sensitive because of their texture. This makes curls more vulnerable and in need of good care. So it is important that you treat curls with respect. We have listed the do's & don'ts for taking care of curls.
1. Wash curly hair with the right products
Natural curls should be washed about once a week. This can vary from person to person, but it is important to keep a regular rhythm. While washing, use a shampoo that contains keratin. Keratin protects and restores the hair, which is especially important when caring for curly hair. In addition, such a shampoo provides less tangles and a shiny curl. To take good care of your curly hair, we recommend to use the products of Curl Control.
2. Use no or as little as possible styling tools
Try to stay away from frequent use of styling tools like straighteners and curling irons. The heat from these tools can damage your hair. Especially when you use such tools daily. Rather, make sure you have a good grooming routine that allows you to embrace your natural curls. If you do want to use a styling tool, spray your hair with a heat protectant beforehand.
3. Invest in a good hairdresser
We cannot say it often enough, but a good hairdresser is half the battle. A good barber knows what he sells and knows how to deal with curls. They can also provide you with the best advice on what is good for your curly hair. It is therefore not at all crazy to ask for advice from a hairdresser before you have it cut. You can also choose to go to a specialized hairdresser for curly hair.
4. Do not dye your hair too often
Curly hair benefits from its resilience and strength. The chemical treatment involved in dyeing your hair does not benefit your curls. However, we understand that you may want to change things up once in a while. In that case never try to dye your hair yourself but go to a hairdresser. They know which hair dye to use for your curls, so you can minimize damage and keep your hair healthy.
5. Comb your hair under the shower
An absolute NO NO on curls is brushing or combing your hair when your hair is dry. A curl consists of multiple hairs that form a bundle. When you brush through them, you break the bundle and all the loose hairs create a lot of frizz. In fact, curly hair should be brushed or combed as little as possible. And if you do brush it, get the biggest tangles out of your hair first with your hands. Curly hair is best combed in the shower when you have a hair mask in your hair. Use a coarse comb with 5 teeth. Make sure that you do this carefully and in a calm manner, so that you avoid internal damage of the year. Find out how to boost natural curls with the right styling tips here.
