What is leave-in conditioner?
Healthy Hair Tips
Here’s how to get the most out of your leave-in conditioner
A leave-in conditioner is a conditioning hair product that you apply after washing and do not rinse out. The product stays in your hair while it dries and throughout the rest of the day, giving your hair extra care alongside your regular haircare routine.
Leave-in conditioners come in different forms, including sprays, creams and lotions. Which one works best for you depends on your hair type and what your hair needs.
A lightweight spray, for example, can work well for hair that is easily weighed down, while a hair cream may be more suitable if your hair needs extra nourishment and softness. A hair lotion can also help condition the hair and make it easier to manage. Want to set your style afterwards? Complete your routine with hairspray.
But what exactly does a leave-in conditioner do, when should you use it and do you need one in addition to a regular conditioner? We explain.
What does a leave-in conditioner do for your hair?
A leave-in conditioner gives your hair extra care after washing. Depending on the formula, it can help hydrate and soften the hair, make it easier to detangle and reduce frizz.
Some leave-in products also offer protection against external factors such as heat or UV exposure. The exact benefits vary from product to product, so always check the properties and directions for use of the leave-in conditioner you are using.
Dry, damaged, coloured, bleached or curly hair can especially benefit from additional care. There are also lightweight formulas for fine hair that condition without unnecessarily weighing it down.

What is the difference between conditioner and leave-in conditioner?
The main difference is how you use them. A regular conditioner is applied to wet hair after shampooing, left on briefly and then rinsed out.
A leave-in conditioner stays in your hair. You usually apply it after stepping out of the shower, for example to towel-dried hair. You can then let your hair air-dry or continue styling it.
The two products therefore do not automatically replace one another. A conditioner cares for your hair during your wash routine, while a leave-in can provide additional care afterwards.

How do you use a leave-in conditioner?
You usually use a leave-in conditioner after washing your hair. Start by washing your hair with a shampoo that suits your hair type and use a regular conditioner if desired.
Next, gently squeeze out any excess water and towel-dry your hair. Apply a small amount of leave-in conditioner and distribute it through the hair. Focus mainly on the lengths and ends, unless the product specifically states that it can also be used on the scalp.
Comb or distribute the product evenly through your hair and do not rinse it out. You can then blow-dry, style or air-dry your hair as usual.
Avoid using too much product straight away. Start with a small amount and add more if needed. Fine hair in particular can feel heavy or limp if you use too much leave-in conditioner.
Do you use leave-in conditioner on wet or dry hair?
Most leave-in conditioners are used on clean, towel-dried hair. The hair is still slightly damp, making it easier to distribute the product evenly through the lengths and ends.
Some lightweight leave-in sprays can also be used on dry hair to refresh it between washes, smooth frizzy areas or give dry ends some extra care.
Always check the product instructions. Not every leave-in conditioner is designed to be used in the same way.
Do you need to rinse out leave-in conditioner?
No. As the name suggests, a leave-in conditioner is designed to stay in the hair. You do not need to rinse it out after applying it.
This is also one of the main differences between a leave-in and a regular conditioner. If you rinse a leave-in conditioner out immediately, you are not using the product as intended and will not get the full benefit of its conditioning properties.
How often can you use a leave-in conditioner?
How often you use a leave-in conditioner depends on your hair type, the condition of your hair and the product you choose.
Dry, damaged or curly hair may need additional care more often. If you have fine hair that is easily weighed down, you may prefer to use less product or apply a leave-in only a few times a week.
Pay attention to how your hair responds. Does it feel soft, smooth and cared for without becoming heavy or greasy? Then the amount you are using is probably right for your hair.
Can you use conditioner and leave-in conditioner together?
Yes, in many cases you can combine a regular conditioner with a leave-in conditioner.
After shampooing, apply your regular conditioner first and rinse it out. Then towel-dry your hair and apply your leave-in conditioner. This adds an extra conditioning step after your usual wash routine.
Not every hair type needs both products after every wash. Fine hair or hair that is easily weighed down often needs less product than very dry, damaged or curly hair.
Always follow the instructions for the specific product as well. Some intensive leave-in treatments may have a different recommended routine.
Which leave-in conditioner is right for your hair?
The right leave-in conditioner mainly depends on what your hair needs.
Do you have dry or damaged hair? A richer, conditioning leave-in helps make the hair softer and easier to manage. Vital Nutrition Power Plump, for example, is developed for dry, damaged or chemically treated hair.
Want to strengthen your hair and give the lengths and ends some extra care? Choose the Long & Strong Leave-in.
Do you have curly hair? Your hair often needs hydration without losing its natural curl pattern. Within the Confident Curl range, you will find different leave-ins for wavy, curly and coily hair.
There are also specific leave-in products for coloured and bleached hair. The Color Brillianz range is developed to care for coloured hair and help keep the colour looking vibrant for longer. Do you have bleached hair? The Blonde Savior Leave-in Treatment cares for and strengthens fragile, bleached hair.
So do not just look at the name of the product. Consider your hair type and what your hair actually needs.
