Does your hair feel dry, rough or frizzy? Then it may need extra hydration. Hydrating your hair means adding moisture and helping prevent that moisture from being lost too quickly. The right routine therefore does not consist of just one product, but of several care steps that work together.

With a hydrating shampoo, conditioner, mask and, if needed, a leave-in product, you can give dry hair the care it needs. But how do you hydrate your hair properly, and which products are best suited to it? Below, we explain it step by step.

Why does your hair need hydration?

Your hair can become drier due to different factors. These include frequent washing, blow-drying, straightening or curling, as well as colouring, bleaching and external influences.

When the hair does not retain enough moisture, it can feel rougher and look duller or frizzier. Dry, damaged and curly hair in particular often needs extra hydration.

Good hydration helps make the hair feel softer, smoother and more manageable. That is why it is important not only to add moisture, but also to use products that help retain that moisture in the hair.

How do you hydrate your hair?

Want to hydrate dry hair? Build a routine in which cleansing, conditioning and protection complement each other.

1. Start with a hydrating shampoo

A good routine starts with washing. Choose a hydrating shampoo that gently cleanses the hair without unnecessarily drying it out.

The Vital Nutrition Shampoo is developed for dry and damaged hair, for example. The formula gently cleanses, hydrates and helps make the hair feel softer.

Do you mainly struggle with dry and frizzy hair? Then the Velvet Smooth Shampoo is a suitable choice. This shampoo gently cleanses and helps make frizzy hair smoother and softer.

2. Use a conditioner after every wash

Shampoo cleanses the hair, but a conditioner is just as important for sufficient care.

A conditioner helps condition and smooth the hair and makes it easier to detangle. Apply conditioner mainly to the lengths and ends, where the hair is usually driest.

For dry hair, you can choose the Vital Nutrition Conditioner, for example. It is developed to intensively hydrate, smooth and soften the hair.

3. Add a hydrating hair mask regularly

Does your hair need more than everyday care? Use a hair mask regularly and choose a suitable hair mask.

The Vital Nutrition Mask is an intensely hydrating treatment for dry and damaged hair. The mask helps nourish and smooth the hair and makes it feel softer again.

A mask provides more intensive care than a conditioner, making it particularly suitable when your hair feels very dry, damaged or rough.

4. Use a leave-in product for extra hydration

A leave-in product is applied after washing and does not need to be rinsed out. This allows the hair to receive extra care between washes.

For curly hair, Confident Curl Leave-in Curly is developed to provide long-lasting hydration, help control frizz and support the natural curl shape.

For other hair types, a leave-in conditioner can also be a good addition when the hair tends to feel dry quickly.

Which hydrating hair products do you need?

Which hydrating hair products suit you best depends on your hair type and what else your hair needs.

For a complete hydrating routine, consider:

  • A hydrating shampoo for gentle cleansing.

  • A nourishing conditioner for softness and suppleness.

  • An intensive hair mask for extra care.

  • A leave-in product for long-lasting hydration.

  • A serum if you also struggle with frizz.

How to hydrate dry hair

How you hydrate dry hair depends on your hair type. Not all dry hair has the same needs.

Dry and damaged hair

Is your hair dry due to colouring, bleaching or frequent use of heat styling tools? Choose products that combine hydration with conditioning and strengthening.

The Vital Nutrition range, for example, is developed for dry and damaged hair. Combine the shampoo with conditioner and mask for a complete routine.

Dry and frizzy hair

Dryness and frizz often go hand in hand. When the hair does not retain enough moisture, it can feel rougher and become frizzy more quickly.

The Velvet Smooth routine is designed for frizzy and unruly hair. For extra smoothness, you can use Velvet Smooth Silkening Polish, for example. This lightweight serum helps smooth frizzy hair and keep it under control.

Dry and curly hair

Curly hair often needs extra hydration. The scalp's natural oils have more difficulty travelling through the lengths of curly hair, which means the ends in particular can become dry more quickly.

Use products that hydrate without weighing the curls down. The Confident Curl range is specially developed for wavy, curly and coily hair and includes shampoo, conditioner, masks and leave-in care.

What is the difference between hydrating and nourishing?

Hydrating and nourishing are often used interchangeably, but they do not mean exactly the same thing.

Hydration mainly focuses on replenishing and retaining moisture in the hair. Nourishment is more about conditioning ingredients such as oils, butters and lipids that help make the hair more supple and soft.

Dry hair often needs both. That is why many good hair care products contain a combination of hydrating and nourishing ingredients.

Which ingredients help hydrate your hair?

In hydrating hair products, you can look for ingredients that attract or retain moisture or help support the hair's natural protective barrier.

KEUNE products contain ingredients such as glycerin, panthenol, ceramides and various conditioning oils. In Vital Nutrition, ingredients including Ceramide NG and cholesterol help the hair retain moisture, while glycerin and panthenol have hydrating and softening properties.

How often should you hydrate your hair?

That depends on your hair type and the condition of your hair. As a basic rule, use conditioner after every wash. You can use an intensive mask once a week, for example, or more often when your hair is very dry or damaged.

Leave-in products can be used after every wash when your hair needs extra hydration. For very dry or curly hair, a small amount between washes may also help.

Pay attention to how your hair feels. Does it feel heavy or limp? Then you may be using more care than your hair needs.

What helps with extremely dry hair?

Extremely dry hair usually needs a complete routine rather than one individual product. Use a gentle hydrating shampoo, a nourishing conditioner and an intensive mask regularly. Add a leave-in product if needed to keep the hair cared for after washing.

Also try to limit further drying as much as possible. Avoid very hot water, limit high temperatures from styling tools and protect your hair whenever you use heat.

What really works for frizzy hair?

Frizzy hair often benefits from a combination of hydration and smoothing care. A conditioner and mask help make the hair softer. A serum can then help smooth the outside of the hair and keep frizz under control.

The Velvet Smooth routine is specifically developed to make frizzy hair smoother and more manageable. The range combines conditioning with protection against humidity.

What should you do for dry and frizzy hair?

If your hair is both dry and frizzy, first make sure it receives enough hydration and then add products that help keep it smooth.

Use a hydrating shampoo and conditioner, regularly add a mask and, if needed, finish your routine with a serum or leave-in product.

Also avoid roughly rubbing your hair dry with a towel and limit excessive exposure to high temperatures.

Extra tips to keep your hair hydrated

In addition to using the right products, small changes to your routine can help reduce dryness:

  • Do not wash your hair more often than necessary.

  • Use lukewarm water instead of very hot water.

  • Apply conditioner mainly to the lengths and ends.

  • Use a hair mask regularly when your hair is dry.

  • Use a leave-in product when your hair needs extra care between washes.

  • Protect your hair against high temperatures.

  • Have dry and split ends trimmed regularly.

  • Choose products based on your hair type, not only on dryness.

With the right routine, you can gradually give dry hair more hydration, softness and suppleness.
