Can shampoo expire?

Yes, shampoo can expire.

Unopened, regular shampoo usually has a shelf life of 2 to 3 years. Once opened, it generally lasts for 12 months (or according to the symbol on the back of the packaging, often 6 to 12 months). Natural shampoos often have a significantly shorter shelf life of just 3 to 6 months because they contain fewer preservatives.

How can you tell if shampoo has gone bad?

Smell: The shampoo smells rancid, unusually sour, or unpleasant.

Consistency: The texture becomes lumpy, very watery, or grainy, or the product separates into different layers (water and oil).

Color: The shampoo's original color has visibly changed.

Is it dangerous to use expired shampoo?

Shampoo that has recently passed its expiration date is usually not immediately harmful, but it may lose some of its cleansing or conditioning effectiveness. However, if microorganisms or bacteria have developed, for example, because water has entered the bottle, this can cause scalp itching, redness, or irritation. If in doubt, you should discard the product.
