How to use a curling iron: creating beautiful curls
A curling iron comes in many different shapes and sizes. It’s a handy tool for styling your hair. You can use it to create beautiful, defined curls whether you have fine hair that needs extra volume or want to transform straight hair into gorgeous, wavy curls.
Which curling iron is best for my hair?
Choosing the right curling iron depends on two important factors: your hair type and your hair length. In addition, pay attention to the temperature settings and the barrel thickness. This ensures that your hair is not only beautifully curled, but also stays healthy.
1. Determine your hair type
To choose the right curling iron for your hair type, consider both your hair texture and the result you want to achieve.
Do you have fine hair that loses its shape quickly? Then choose a curling iron with a clamp. Is your hair thick or coarse and do you want more volume and movement? A curling iron without a clamp may suit your hair better.
2. Determine your hair length
Your hair length is also important when choosing a curling iron. For short hair, a narrower barrel works best. For long hair, a thicker barrel generally gives better results.
Setting the temperature for your hair type
Most curling irons allow you to adjust the temperature, usually from 130°C to 220°C. It’s important to select the right temperature for your hair type to prevent unnecessary damage.
You can use the following guidelines:
Thin, fine hair: around 180°C
Normal hair: around 200°C
Thick, coarse hair: around 220°C
Do your curls fall flat quickly? Increase the temperature by 10°C.
Use a curling iron on wet or dry hair?
Make sure your hair is completely dry before you start curling. Wet hair can be damaged by the heat of a curling iron.
Curling your hair with a curling iron
Creating beautiful curls with a curling iron may seem difficult, but with the right preparation and technique, anyone can do it. Below is a step-by-step guide to achieving gorgeous curls.
1. Preparation and sectioning
First, wash your hair and gently dry with a towel. Then apply a heat-protectant product to towel-dried hair. Next, divide your hair into two equal sections—top and bottom—using a tail comb or your fingers. Make sure your hair is completely dry before using the curling iron.
Create a clean part down to the scalp to ensure neat sectioning. Twist the top section of your hair and secure it firmly with a clip.
2. Protection
Before you start, it’s important to apply a heat-protectant product. The heat from the curling iron activates the product, helping your curls last longer while also providing extra protection against heat damage.
For extra hold, you can apply a styling product after the heat protectant, such as Cashmere Cloud. This gives the hair more grip so the curls stay in place better.
Tip: Luminous Coat Supreme Cream and Ultimate Blowout give your hair a silky shine and protect up to 230°C. Both products are applied to towel-dried hair.
3. Creating the curls
Take a section of hair and start at the roots. Wrap the strand evenly around the curling iron for better heat distribution and firmer curls. Leave the ends partially free to reduce heat exposure and create a more natural, looser look.
Hold the strand in place for 10 to 15 seconds. Fine hair usually requires less time than thick or coarse hair.
Carefully slide the curl off the curling iron and allow it to cool completely before moving on to the next section. This helps set the curl more effectively.
4. Finishing and setting
Once all sections are curled and fully cooled, first set the curls with Free Styler hairspray. Then gently loosen them with your fingers for a longer-lasting final result. The hairspray provides medium hold for up to 24 hours while adding a beautiful shine.
Tips for long-lasting curls
To make sure your beautiful curls stay in place all day, here are a few professional tips from hairstylists.
Set your curls for extra hold
A handy trick to give your curls extra hold is to briefly secure each curl with a clip after releasing it from the curling iron. This allows the curl to cool properly, helping it keep its shape longer.
Let your hair cool before styling
Have you just finished using the curling iron? Wait a few minutes until all sections have completely cooled down. Only then run your fingers or a brush/comb through your hair. This helps the curls keep their shape and prevents frizz.
Fix your curls
A good hairspray is essential. Choose one that sets your curls without taking away their natural movement. Apply the spray evenly throughout your hair, including the underside. Avoid using too much hairspray, as this can cause the curls to drop.
Try different techniques and products to discover the look that suits you best. Practice makes perfect and before you know it, you’ll have created the perfect curls!
