Should you dye your hair yourself or go to the hairdresser?
Global Education Director
The eternal question! Is it wise to dye your hair yourself or is it better to go to the hairdresser?
As hair professionals, we are not fans of dyeing your hair at home. Unless you have experience with professional hairdressing products. For example, if you have completed a hairdressing course. If you are not a professional, you run a high risk of a bad result and hair damage.
Leave it to the proHair coloring is a profession. It is a process in which you must use the right formulas and coloring techniques to get a beautiful result. A hairdresser will advise you on which color suits you best . He or she will also tell you how to optimally care for your hair afterwards.
Good preparation is key when you have your hair dyed at the hairdresser. We have listed a number of frequently asked questions for you. The Keune hair experts will give you all the answers you need.
Is hair dye at the hairdresser better? The quality of professional hair coloring at a hairdresser is considerably better than hair dye from a packet at the drugstore. Hair dye from a drugstore is tailored to the average consumer without hairdressing experience.
This hair dye must work on every type of hair. That is why it contains higher percentages of chemicals than professional hair dye. This can be bad for the quality of your hair.
The color that the hairdresser chooses works better on your hair. This is because it is specially tailored to your hair. A hairdresser mixes different colors to achieve the desired result.
The resultHair dye from the drugstore contains one color, but can give varying results. This depends on your own hair color and the color of the hair dye. In addition, the color can turn out differently on dry, damaged hair.
A hairdresser looks at your hair type, quality and color and whether you have had previous color treatments. Based on this, he or she will come up with a tailor-made color.
How long does hair dye from the hairdresser last?Drugstore hair dye is of inferior quality and fades from your hair faster than professional hair dye. Permanent hair dye from the hairdresser lasts a very long time. The color fades very slowly. How quickly this process goes depends on the hair care after the coloring.
Over time, you will see regrowth at your hair roots. Hairdressers recommend touching up the regrowth every 6 to 8 weeks. Tip: the balayage technique reduces the visible effect of regrowth.
A semi-permanent hair dye fades from your hair faster. You wash it out of your hair gradually.
What is the best hairdresser to dye your hair? Before you have your hair dyed at the hairdresser, it is a good idea to do some research first. This way you can look at hairdressers who have won prizes for hair coloring in competitions.
Not sure which hair color suits you? Then visit the hairdresser for a consultation. This way you can avoid a hair color that you are not happy with.

Dyeing curly hair at the hairdresserCurly hair is naturally more sensitive and brittle than straight hair. This means that you have to be very careful when dyeing it.
How long does it take to dye your hair at the hairdresser? The time it takes to have your hair dyed at the hairdresser varies greatly depending on your hair type and color treatment. Of course, the longer your hair, the longer the hairdresser will spend on the coloring.
But your hair structure can also make a difference. Thick hair requires a different technique than thin hair. These are the most common color treatments and how much time they approximately take.
1. Bleaching
If you are going to bleach your hair, you can easily set aside half a day to a whole day for this. The darker and longer your hair, the longer you will be in the hairdresser's chair. Especially when you want to go from very dark to very light, it takes a long time. Sometimes you even have to schedule multiple appointments.
Have you had previous color treatments or red pigment in your hair and do you want to bleach your hair? This will affect the bleaching process.
2. Highlights & lowlights
Applying highlights takes on average between 1.5 and 3 hours. This also depends entirely on your wishes and the length of your hair.
3. Balayage
On average, it takes 3 to 5 hours to apply a balayage to your hair. However, this can take longer depending on your wishes, hair length and hair structure.
4. From light to dark
Depending on your hair and the desired end result, it can take about 2.5 to 3 hours.
5. Regrowth
Touching up your regrowth takes about 1.5 hours. The advantage here is that not all of your hair needs to be dyed, only the roots. Go to the hairdresser every 6 to 8 weeks to have your regrowth touched up.
Do you have to wash your hair before having it dyed at the hairdresser? We advise not to wash your hair for 1 to 2 days before the colour treatment. The natural oils on your scalp protect the delicate skin during the dyeing process. Unless you have a lot of product in your hair, this will not affect the hair colour. The result will remain the same.
How long should you not wash your hair after dyeing? After a colour treatment, we advise not to wash your hair again immediately when you get home. This can cause the colour to fade and that would be a shame. Wait at least 1 to 2 days before doing this. We recommend washing your hair twice a week; curly hair once a week.
Keep your new hair colour beautiful for as long as possible with the Tinta Color of Color Brillianz shampoo and conditioner. Repair hair damage from color with our Blonde Savior (for bleached hair) products or Bond Fusion Phase Three (for all color services). Use a mask on color-treated hair once a week for extra hydration. Give bleached hair a cool tone again with So Pure Cool shampoo or conditioner .
How much does hair coloring cost at the hairdresser? The price of a professional hair coloring can vary greatly. It depends on the color treatment, the length of your hair and the experience of the hairdresser.
The longer your hair, the more expensive it will be. More product is needed and it takes longer to dye your hair.
The prices for color treatments also vary per salon. Hairdressers with a lot of experience and who have won awards are often more expensive.
